On Sunday, Kirstjen Nielsen resigned as Homeland Security Secretary, a move that may impact thousands of children in U.S. custody. Sandy Santana, Executive Director of Children’s Rights, issued the following statement:
“Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned, but the family separation policy – enacted under her direction as Homeland Security Secretary – has scarred thousands of children for life. DHS and the Trump Administration must reevaluate how it treats the most vulnerable children and families and promise that nothing resembling this disastrous policy will ever happen again. There are still families who remain separated, and we urge the Administration to effect those reunifications immediately.”
