MICHIGAN, July 16, 2025 ~ The Michigan Department of Human Services wants out of federal oversight of the state’s foster care system, causing concerns among some children’s advocate groups.
The state has concerns with the $1 million annual fees in the services that MDHS would like to see used in other areas, according to an article from Michigan Public Radio. Samantha Bartosz, deputy director of litigation for Children’s Rights, told WJR that she has concerns with this move, due to recent cases involving the Michigan foster care system that include cases of neglect, abuse, and foster children sleeping in offices due to a lack of foster homes. She wants these issues to continue to be addressed before the state withdraws from federal oversight.
