AUGUSTA, Maine — A landmark legal settlement is aiming to overhaul how children in Maine’s foster care system are given certain medications.
Reforms would include a new record-keeping system that follows the child from placement to placement, an informed consent process to help decision-making for teens and a secondary review team to provide recommendations.
Earlier this month, an agreement was reached to settle a 2021 lawsuit against the Maine Department of Health and Human Services filed by Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson and the national advocacy group Children’s Rights.
