A Q/A With Children’s Rights Donor Catherine Rocco Goodwin

We had the opportunity to talk with long-time Children’s Rights friend and supporter, Catherine Rocco Goodwin and find out a little bit about her — and why she believes passionately in Children’s Rights. Catherine cares deeply about children and is so committed to transforming the child welfare system that, after a successful career as an entrepreneur and businesswoman, she pursued a master’s in public administration and policy to advance that commitment.

How did you learn about Children’s Rights?

Our friend, Jay Galluzzo, who is on the Board of CR, introduced me to Sandy (executive director of Children’s Rights) in 2017 when I became a foster parent. And I have been an avid supporter ever since.

What do you think makes Children’s Rights so effective?

Children’s Rights is incredibly effective as one of the most influential advocates for vulnerable children. I think its success comes from a clear mission, the ability to both litigate and advocate simultaneously and its dedicated team’s incredible, unwavering passion. Strong leadership under Sandy also plays a key role in driving its mission and impact.

You seem to be someone who never stops learning. Can you talk about that?

I do love to learn. I didn’t often seek out opportunities to learn when I was younger, so I feel like I’m making up for lost time! Going back for my master’s later in life was a challenge but very rewarding. I feel now that learning keeps me curious and adaptable, both personally and professionally. Whether it’s picking up a new skill, exploring different perspectives, or simply reading more about a topic that interests me, I feel like growth is an ongoing journey that I am enjoying.

Who inspired you growing up?

In high school, as part of our curriculum, I had the opportunity to work in Juvenile Intake at the courthouse in Washington, DC. The man I worked for went above and beyond for every child who came through our office. Witnessing his tireless dedication as a public servant was incredibly inspiring.

Do you have a favorite children’s book or movie?

The Giving Tree. My mother gave it to me when I was young, and I read it to my children.

This touching story about love and giving, showing how selflessness can bring joy, has always stuck with me throughout the years. Its simple message speaks to people of all ages and reminds us of how relationships change over time.
